Glad you're pairing these together!
She say's she can't guarentee that she'll love her, but her actions speak otherwise. Literally the only relative who stood up for her and considered her feelings, taught her the importance of making amends with friends after fights, and gave her comfort when she felt lonely and vulnerable. She definitely deserves to be her guardian, she manifests the purest of love and protection. She's mothering and can't even see it.
I think Makio told her friends that she's barely related to Asa because during her sister's funeral some other relatives were talking between themselves and I seem to remember they said some throwaway bit of dialogue about how Asa isn't actually Makio's sister's daughter and she's actually a distant relative she was raising as her own.
That means Asa is also just distantly related to Makio on top of not knowing each other, though I think in their case it literally doesn't matter how close their blood relation is. Makio still stepped up and it's clear her whole thing is her beef with her late sister and the fact that she's a loner and dislikes being around people, and not so much Asa in and of herself and whether she is or isn't her niece by blood.
It would also kind of explain why nobody else seemed to want to take Asa, and why Makio literally said she wouldn't stand by and let Asa be passed around a bunch of people who didn't want her, which I'd assume is kind of what already happened to her when she was younger until Makio's sister stepped up herself.
As for whether Makio's sister was really that mean, I'm inclined to agree with you and Makio's probably gaslighting herself into remembering a very biased version of her sister based only on their worst interactions that she can't forgive.
In the previous episode when they went to clean out Asa's previous aparrment Makio found some of her sister's clothes that were the kind she never saw her sister wear and she remembered Asa's mom would criticize her for wearing that exact style. So either Asa's mom chilled a lot over the years during their estrangement, or the version in Makio's head is not really that accurate and she doesn't realize she's portraying her as a cartoon villain in her memory from the p.o.v. of a much younger kid she no longer is.
At this point, I'm expecting Makio to pull a Frieren and realize it's too late to get to know her sister and she wasted those years, only instead of wandering off collecting spells and forgetting to check in, she spent them being angry about dumb stuff she blew out of proportion and refusing to talk to Asa's mom.
Totally agree, more people need to be aware of this anime and watch it.
This is definitely my favorite series right now, and is/was one of my favorite manga to read
Parents are creatures of contradictions.
They want their children to live freely, but somewhere deep down they want them to be what the parents want them to be…
Thank you for covering this show. It's excellent. I appreciate you.
Thank you for keep posting on yt even though it doesn't get high views! I've been looking forward to your reactions every ep ^^
Yet again commenting because this show needs more coverage and you are the only one doing it.
i had a weird relationship with an ex after a long period of time, we broke up basically didnt talk for like 8 years i drunk texted her on facebook it wasnt even like me hitting on her it was literally like a meme we started talking again then we ended up playing dnd with her friends and her now husband every week end lol
Related to some of the earlier conversation, I do think the sister mellowed out as she got older, and you're likely right that the "frozen" perspective of the surviving sister was a bit out of date. But they've shown some very judgmental flashbacks from her, I do think she was rough on her sister, but clearly was a lot more loving and soft to her own daughter, and probably the sisters could have gotten to a different place eventually if she had survived and they had the opportunity to reconnect.
Commenting again now that I've watched the video. My read is Asa is miscommunicating. She's used to the questions "Can I do…." and "Should I do…" effectively having the same answer. Her mother always pushed her opinions on her and that's what she's expecting. Thus, she's interpreting her aunt's lack of pushing opinions as ignoring her.
That said, Maikio should also understand that Asa needs more advice and guidance than she's giving. It's a perfectly believable mistake, especially given Makio has never raised a child before. But she really should be approaching with more of a "You can do what you want, but personally I think it's a good/bad idea because of X reason" response.
Yes please keep uploading it I'm loving this show lol I actually have an ex that we got along that well afterward! There was an uncomfortable phase but once we talked it out and discussed why it didn't work, we were still great friends for years after. It was only once we moved far away that we drifted apart. I also hope Asa and Emiri don't drift apart. I hope its just a temporary thing as they're getting used to school and once they get their groove going they figure out spending time together.
30:00 people didnt know macs are stupid expensive? i used to work in pc repair and alot of times if a repair qoute was stupid expensive we suggest just buying a new one because the way we prices stuff profits margins were basically the same so weither the repair coost 100 bucks or 800 bucks we were making the same on our end the deciding factor was ussually cost of the part i qouted a woman 800 bucks for a macbook repair and suggested she just buy a new one and she said she paid like 3 k for the computer and i was just like….y? lol she used it for school not even required like litterally used it to watch youtube and write schoool papers like mac people are wild you can do that with a 400$ laptoop from walmart if thats all your using it for
Been waiting the whole series to see something in one of these flashbacks to explain why Makio hated her so much, and it's increasingly looking like pure mental distortion on Makio's part. I'd almost feel better if we actually did get a flashback with Minori saying something genuinely messed up.
