How ‘Gamera vs. Gyaos’ Saved the Franchise
In this retrospective, we take a deep dive into Gamera vs. Gyaos (1967), the pivotal third entry in Daiei’s kaiju franchise that redefined Gamera’s role as a protector of children. After the darker tone of Gamera vs. Barugon failed to resonate, Daiei shifted gears with the return of director Noriaki Yuasa and writer Niisan Takahashi. This installment introduces Gyaos, one of Gamera’s most iconic enemies—a bat-like, laser-shooting creature that remains a standout in kaiju cinema.
We explore how Gamera vs. Gyaos helped shape the identity of the series, why it resonated with younger audiences, and how it stood apart from Toho’s Godzilla series and the rising popularity of Ultraman. Featuring inventive practical effects, a tighter story structure, and a clear tone, the film marked a turning point for Gamera as a genuine kaiju hero.
If you’re a fan of Gamera, Godzilla, Ultraman, or classic Japanese monster movies, this is a must-watch breakdown of how Daiei Studios carved out a unique space in the kaiju genre during its golden age.

This is the most heroic and determined Gamera has ever been in a movie in my opinion
I had no idea that the way this movie was made was mostly in response to how Gamera vs Baragon was presented. Never knew anyrhing about this interesting behind the scenes info on Showa era Gamera, considering how easy it is to learn about Godzilla's shows era.
I LOVE gamera
have you seen the gamera episodes of mystery science theater 3000?
I'm pretty sure this was the first time Gamera had a theme song, the heroic tone fit well with shows like Ultraman and Spectreman which at the time were probably the reason people weren't showing up in theatres. That must've been a way to get people back in the theatres.
Gamera vs Gyaos was like watching a superhero fight a kaiju and only this time the star hero was a kaiju, Gamera vs. Gyaos is one of the best 60s Tokusatsu films ever made and my personal favourite Gamera film.

It all went down from here in the Showa era
Gamera is really neat! He is filled with turtle meat! We all love you Ga-Me-Raaaaa!
Yeah "save" only to fall off big time in a few years.
This movie is a nice balance between the serious tone of Gamera vs. Barugon and campy silliness of the later Showa Gamera films! While I enjoy the more goofy Gamera movies, I sort of wish both Noriaki Yuasa and Daiei continued with this tone.
Gamera vs Gyuron was my favourite as a kid. But this was a good one too
I love the showa Gamera series so much and I adore the way Kaneko’s trilogy and Gamera The Brave adapt and expand on the concepts that made showa Gamera unique and special
This is my favorite Kaiju movie of all time! I love it
