      I think it’s that Taira noticed that Azuma changed since middle school cuz she was like more reserved and faking it with her “friend group” but now with this current friend group she seems way more lively and comfortable

      Taira noticed Azuma becoming "let your real emotion out" type of person, remember Azuma didn't want to hurt the "friends", so she would always try to hide her real thought, and did those fake smiling, but after the conversation between her and Taira, she finally realizes that she doesn't need to hide her feelings anymore because the friends she has now are the real friends.

      And yes, both of Taira and Azuma are not that much polar opposite, they both are very negative at something, very mature in this age comparing to other classmates, and care about other people's feelings, but in the opposite side, Taira will let his emotion release out, always "I hate this world" on his face, but Azuma is different, she always wearing a mask for keeping the relationship even though it's a fake relationship, and here is why I love this episode so much, because you can see both of them, Taira and Azuma, are changing their thought, Taira feels happy in this trip, and Azuma won't hide her feelings anymore, no more fake smiles, it's a true smile, that makes Taira say "feel like you are more classmate-like now" because the past Azuma in Taira's eye was always trying to be mature, but here she just smiles like a kid. They are both more confident, happier, and enjoy their own life, what a couple.

      Taira is too self-conscious and cares way too much what other people think about him and how treat they him, while Azuma has no self-esteem and doesn't really care how people treat her.

      It's definitely a far more subtle kind of opposites than the other two couples.

      I think Taira isolates himself and shuts down potential friendships as a self defense mechanism. Azuma tends to suppress her own feelings and just go with the flow to preserve her friendships. Taira taught her to be a bit more vocal about her own feelings.
