Thinking about the stasis box being a billion years old… Are they using carbon dating or some other way to timestamp the age of the stasis box? Does carbon dating even work on a billion? The contents inside the box do not age, so carbon dating would not work from that perspective.
Paul Giamatti was given the scripts for the first five episodes and a choice of characters to play, and he chose the character you saw in the trailer. So, yeah, he was fully aware of what he was getting into.
